Dependency Assessment

K can help you automatically conduct dependency assessments for your critical data and BI assets.

The K dependency assessment allows you to identify all the dependencies for a given asset. Common scenarios where an dependency assessment would be helpful include:

  • Checking which data assets can be decommissioned when archiving a report

  • Quickly verifying which data assets are critical to the quality of a dashboard

  • Generating a list of users, data owners or stewards of dependent data assets to contact

  • Data migration analysis

Accessing Dependency Assessment

You can access the Dependency Assessment through the Data Applications page or the Data Item’s Profile Page (e.g. table profile)

Access via Data Applications on the side bar

Access via your Data Item’s Profile Page

If you select the Dependency assessment via the Data Item’s profile page, the data details will automatically pre-populate

Tailoring your Dependency Assessment

By default, the K Dependency Assessment will assess the dependencies across

  • Data assets (e.g. tables)

  • Data content (e.g. reports)

  • Users (e.g. data owners, stewards and users of dependent data assets/content)

In addition to the above 3 criteria, users are able to add up to 3 additional criteria. In the below example, 3 collection types were selected for additional assessment: Verified Use Case, Classification, and PII Detected

If you need to select more than 3 criteria, after running the dependency assessment, you can click on the Rerun button to duplicate the dependency assessment and then choose the additional criteria.

Multi-Dependency Assessments

K has the ability to run a dependency assessment on multiple items at the same time.

To run a Multi-Dependency Assessment you need to first add items to your Data Cart

After all the data items have been added to your Data Cart, click on the Dependency Assessment option under Data Apps

Key things to note that are unique to a Multi-Dependency Assessment

  • The more items you select the longer the Dependency Assessment will take

  • There is currently a max limit of 25 items that can be included in one assessment.

  • When you run the Dependency Assessment there is the option to select ‘Clear Cart’. This option is useful when you have more than 25 items in your Data Cart. After clearing your data cart of the data items selected for this Dependency Assessment, you can then easily run a subsequent assessment on the next batch of items.

Helpful Tips

  • Dependency assessments are only available for 7 days. Remember to download a copy of the assessment for future reference.

  • If you click on the Rerun button and choose not to change any of the dependency assessment criteria, the current dependency assessment will be over-written. If you make changes (e.g. usage period), then a new dependency assessment will be generated.

  • Remember to toggle between the Dashboard view and Details view for each assessment criteria. Each view is tailored to the assessment criteria that has been selected.
